Learn how to integrate environmental sustainability into social enterprises while exploring business models with different approaches to the role of revenue/profit and positive societal outcomes. Gain insights into the complex relationships between these domains and explore innovative solutions for sustainable development. The intersection of business and social impact is a focal point of this course.Recognizing the global nature of environmental challenges, this program embeds students into the South Korea context to serve examining energy, environment, and social innovation. Seoul is a major economic hub not only for South Korea but also for the entire East Asian region. Its economic strength and technological advancements make it a key player in shaping policies and practices related to energy, environment, and innovation. Students will hear from distinguished professors from Seoul National University.

This course will meet on the Bloomington campus during the first half of the spring semester and then will travel to South Korea over spring break. Students from other regional campuses may join the pre-departure classes remotely.

Below is a list of potential excursions:

Student will stay in a hotel or high-quality hostel in central Seoul. Students will share a room with 2-4 other students on the program; each student will have their own bed.

All O’Neill International programs are academic, credit-bearing courses that take place abroad. As such, your bursar will be charged two amounts for participation in this program:

  1. Program Fee forO’Neill in South Korea (made in two payments)
  2. Tuition for the course (3 credits at your normal IU-Bloomington tuition rate)

2025 South Korea Program Fee: $700-$1000*

* Program Fee will be finalized by October 1

The Program Fee for this program includes:

  • Lodging for 1-week in central Seoul
  • Site visits and guest speakers
  • Cultural excursions
  • Some meals
  • International health insurance

The Program Fee will be charged to your IU Bloomington Bursar account in two installments:

  1. A $250 non-refundable pre-payment will be charged shortly after you confirm your participation in the program
  2. The remainingbalance will be charged inJanuary

Tuition for O’Neill in South Korea course: 3 credits paid at your IU-Bloomington tuition rate (resident/non-resident, grad/UG, etc.)

Note – for this course, if you are enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student on the Bloomington campus during the spring semester and enroll in the course as part of your block credits, there is no additional tuition cost to participate in this program.

Graduate students, students from other IU campuses, and part-time students will pay for 3 credit hours of tuition, based on your student status (resident/non-resident) on the Bloomington campus.

Additional Costs

Students will pay for their own flight to and from South Korea, meals that are not included in the Program Fee, and other personal incidentals.

Scholarships

The O’Neill International Office offers several scholarships to support students studying abroad. The O’Neill International Equal Opportunity Scholarship is a need-based award available to help O'Neill students from IUB and IUI to be able to study abroad. The O’Neill in Korea program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any IU school and campus. Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to participate. This program is especially suitable for students interested in sustainable development, social entrepreneurship, and comparative international policy.

During the application period (September 1 - October 1) an "Apply Now" button will be available at the top of this page. You will need to submit the online application by 5 pm on October 1.
